Introduction & Background
Barn Elms Sports Trust (BEST) is a registered charity dedicated to ensuring the future of the sporting provision on the old Barn Elms Playing Fields site in SW13. The site was set to be sold in 2005 before a local group set out to preserve the beautiful, green, open space and ensure it wasn’t turned into a large private health club.
In 2008 a local group with the name of Barnes Vision was formed and 10 months later they had attracted £2 million worth of funding from large donors. By 2009 Richmond Council had approved the groups plans to improve the site and redevelop it rather than selling it off.
In 2013 Barn Elms Sports Trust were awarded the full management contract of the site on behalf of Richmond Council after years of fundraising and campaigning to keep the ground as a sports Facility. They also signed a contract that will protect the playing fields for public use for the next 199 years. Now the site is imperative to the local community, providing playing fields and facilities for a variety of local schools, sporting teams and community groups
